Winter Farmers' Markets In and Around Boston

1/9/13 - By Tara D

Farmers’ Markets present great opportunities for supporting local farmers and buying foods you can feel good about giving to your kids. The markets are also wonderful for cultivating a sense of community, finding unique gifts, enjoying live music, and learning something new.

Even though it’s winter, your family shouldn't be deprived of the farmers’ market experience! Read on for this year's Boston-area winter markets. (Sadly, a couple of markets we featured last year are not running this year, but there are new winter markets in Medford, Brookline and Newton.)

Please note: We are currently updating this post with information for this winter

Dorchester/Codman Square Health Center Winter Farmers Market

The Dorchester Community Food Co-op is well on their way to proving that Margaret Mead knew what she was talking about when she said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” The Co-op is growing a market abundant with winter and greenhouse vegetables and other fresh foods from local vendors. There's also a taco truck outside!

Every week, there are activities and workshops to fit a theme, plus children’s activities. Last year there were also opportunities to explore careers and learn about composting and community gardening, but we couldn't confirm for this season. Don’t miss the massage chair on the first Sunday of each month!

Somerville Winter Farmers’ Market

The Somerville Winter Farmers’ Market, a partnership between Shape Up Somerville and The Center for Arts at the Armory, is located in a beautifully converted two-story space. At the market, you will find a range of local and regional produce, as well as meats, fish, breads, pastries, chocolate, and wine offered by regular weekly vendors and a rotating schedule of guest vendors. If you’re lucky, the donut guy will be there, making fresh donuts. Gluten-free foodies will be delighted with the new addition of Violette Gluten Free goodies.

There are musicians playing on the balcony while you shop, and an offering of children's activities, too. If all that food shopping has made some little tummies start to grumble, stop into the Armory’s café on your way out for muffins, sandwiches, soups and salads.

SOWA Winter Farmers’ Market

[CLOSED for Winter 2013]

Opening Day for SOWA Farmers' Market is Sunday, May 5, 2013

What a nice way to do your weekend shopping! Every Sunday you can stroll through the SoWa Winter Farmers’ Market and take it all in: local produce, live plants, baked goods, herbs, free range meats, cheeses, and arts & crafts.

The juried arts and crafts may include wearables, home décor, children’s products, jewelry, bath and body products, ceramics, art and sculpture. The market also offers craft workshops like Recycle Your Closet, where you can learn how to turn old clothes into Folk Couture.

If the weather is nice, reward the kids with some playtime after shopping at nearby Rotch Playground, located at 50 Randolph Street.

Boston/Prudential Center Winter Farmers' Market

[CLOSED for Winter 2013]

The Prudential Center Winter Farmers’ Market brings the market – the people, the food, the farmers – inside for the winter. Some of your favorite vendors are there with their fresh and fabulous wares, including Hampden Alpacas, John Crow Farm (grass fed meat), Swiss Bakers, When Pigs Fly (breads), Cook’s Farm, Fastachi, and The Herb Lyceum (from the Gilson Family Homestead in Groton).

The market is near the post office, so you can take care of another item from your to-do list while you’re there.
