Things to Do in Boston with Kids for Memorial Day Weekend 2013

Things to do with kids: Things to Do in Boston with Kids for Memorial Day Weekend 2013

For many Bostonians, Memorial Day is quite often the unofficial kickoff to summer, complete with backyard barbecues, trips to the Cape or New Hampshire, and a welcome day off from school.

But Memorial Day also has a more serious side, as its true meaning is to remember the many military men and women who have given their lives serving our country. Many families do this by attending their local Memorial Day parades, which take place in towns all over Massachusetts. We’ve rounded up some other activities that take place on Memorial Day weekend (this year: May 25 to May 27) in and around Boston.

Things to Do in Boston with Kids - Japan Festival, EarthFest and More 5/18-5/19

Things to do with kids: Things to Do in Boston with Kids - Japan Festival, EarthFest and More 5/18-5/19

There’s plenty of fun and free things to do in and around Boston this weekend. From EarthFest at the Hatch Shell, the Franklin Park Kite Festival, and the Hot Dog Safari on Saturday to the Japan Festival Boston and the Mystic River Herring Run and Paddle on Sunday, the weekend is filled with festivals and celebrations. Read on for more of our weekend picks, and be sure to check our Events Calendar for more ideas.

Looking for more things to do? Rachel, our newest contributor, recently took her two year old to the Arnold Arboretum and has five simple ways to occupy a toddler (or two) and connect with nature in one of the city’s most beautiful and peaceful green spaces. Kristin describes her “love affair” with Baby Wiggle Little Groove - great classes, fun birthday parties and more. Plus, the Highland Street Foundation's Free Fridays schedule is out - Tara has chosen five to highlight, taking into consideration whether other significant discounts (such as library museum passes) are available at another time, how much money is saved, proximity to Boston, and whether the place is good for young children.

Finally, a big thank you to all the families, volunteers, sponsors and supporters who helped make last week’s One Family Music Festival such a success - thanks to everyone’s generosity, we were able to raise over $23,000 for the One Fund Boston. We also brought the families of Boston together to sing, dance, create art, and celebrate the strength and beauty of our great city. It was a day that allowed many families to begin healing from the pain caused by the tragic events surrounding this year’s Boston Marathon, and to reclaim the city for our children.

Enjoy the weekend!

Things to do with kids: Free and Fun Things to Do in Boston with Kids - Mother's Day, One Family Music Festival and More, 5/11 - 5/12

Happy Mother’s Day!

We’re all about Mother’s Day in Boston this week, with a full calendar of special events that kids and families can do together. With events like the One Family Music Festival on Sunday, plus the Watch City Festival, Lilac Sunday and the Duckling Day Parade, families can find plenty of things to do. Read on for weekend highlights, and see our Events Calendar for more events.

Our Mother’s Day weekend coverage continued this week with some ideas for Mother’s Day day trips. We also cover spring Farmers Markets and have rounded up a few great places to have your adventurous child's outdoor birthday party.

We also want to know: What’s your child’s favorite thing about Boston? Is it a diner in your neighborhood? The Frog Pond? How about the Boston Fire Museum? Email us a photo or drawing, and we’ll feature it in our slideshow at the One Family Music Festival this Sunday! Imagine your child’s face when she sees her drawing or photo up on the big screen! If you need some inspiration, check out our 100 Things to Do in Boston with Kids Before They Grow Up.

Enjoy!

What else will you find on Mommy Poppins Boston this week? We’ve rounded up some of the great learn to sail programs that are available for kids in and around Boston. And Kristin shares some tips for planning a toddler birthday party at home in Boston. Yes, you can bring a bouncy house into your living room! Mother’s Day is only a week away; you may want to consider a special meal at home (giving you plenty of time to get to The One Family Music Festival to support The One Fund!). Make-Ahead Mother's Day Brunch - 3 Easy Recipes for Kids

Things to do with kids: Make-Ahead Mother's Day Brunch - 3 Easy Recipes for Kids

Who ever came up with the idea of breakfast in bed for Mother’s Day as a special treat for mom? Both my kids love to cook, but I would never turn over my kitchen to them for them to fix a surprise meal for me (even with Dad supervising). Plus, as much as I enjoy eating together, sharing the time in the kitchen is at least as special.

This year, we’ve found a way to have our cake and eat it, too (see dessert!). What follows is simple Mother's Day meal kids can put together almost all by themselves. With a guiding hand from mom (or dad), kids can get almost everything prepared on Saturday, and add the finishing touches just before serving on Mother’s Day. Thanks to our grandma for the inspiration!

Things to do with kids: Fun and Free Things to Do in Boston with Kids - Festivals, Celebrations and More Apr 27-28

Festival season has begun! From the Harvard ArtsFirst Festival to the Boston College Arts Festival, the Sheepshearing Festival at Gore Place to the Leonard Bernstein Festival of the Creative Arts at Brandeis, our calendar is filling up with this sure sign of spring. We also have performances of the Catskill Puppet Theater’s The Town that Fought Hate, an Earth Day celebration in Concord, a children’s opera by the Boston Conservatory, and more. Read on for this weekend’s highlights.

Early results from our recent survey (didn’t get a chance to take it? there’s still time!) indicate that our readers are interested in knowing about day trips and weekend getaways. In that vein, we continue our coverage with some insights into the East Bay RI towns of Bristol and Warren. We also recognize National Bike Month in May with our Cycling with Kids post that covers local trails and routes, tours, and special bike-related events.

And with Mother’s Day just over two weeks away, we’ve highlighted some special kid-friendly Mother’s Day brunches - reservations required!

Be sure to check our Events calendar for more things to do, and please stay tuned for an announcement about a very special festival being planned to benefit The One Fund Boston - The One Family Music Festival. Details coming soon.

Until then, enjoy!
