It's hot! As Philly gets clobbered with yet another a heat wave, this weather is enough to turn even the sweetest kids into total grumps. And while staying in and enjoying your A/C has its perks, sometimes you just need to get out of the house. Fortunately, no matter the weather, there are amazing places to romp and play in the city and the suburbs that can help you keep cool and beat the heat.

Swim & Slide â€” Best Water Parks near Philly

Pack your swimsuits and head to one of these awesome nearby outdoor water parks, or try an indoor water park to really escape that sun. Here are a couple of our picks.

1. Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom â€” Allentown

Why it's great: Explore two parks for one admission price.

Tip: Get some thrills on the traditional rides and then cool down in Wildwater Kingdom.

2. Hersheypark â€” Hershey

Why it's great: Big kids can enjoy water rides and slides, while smaller kids can splash for hours in Sandcastle Cove.

Tip: Use the rentable lockers in the water park to store dry items while you swim and wet items later as you explore the rest of the park.

Why it's great: Kelly's Olympic-sized pool is filled with 800,000 gallons of water and surrounded by refreshing green space.

Tip: It's an ideal pool for dedicated swimmers, with 3 designated lap lanes.

6. Blue Marsh Lake — Leesport

Why it's great: This beautiful location has plenty of fresh water, picnic tables, concessions and restrooms, surrounded by greenery and trees.

Tip: Castle builders should be prepared to share the small amount of sand.

Consider exploring a cool local cave or cavern, where it's always cooler than the heat outside. Take the family canoeing or kayaking for a lazy cruise. If you really need to cool off, take a trip to the Jersey shore. Nothing beats the ocean spray and beach breeze. Or check out area parks and playgrounds, many of which have water features. Why it's great: There's a wide selection of types of boats for all family sizes and experience levels. Plus, the French Creek Swimming Pool is nearby.

Tip: Expect to leave a car key or driver's license for collateral during rentals.

11. Wildwoods 

Why it's great: Affordable, family-friendly, plenty of entertainment and free beaches make this a popular location.

Tip: Bring a cart or a wagon to bring items from the car to the beach, because it's a long walk from the car to the sand.

The best museums for kids in the Philadelphia area provide hands-on fun. From browsing galleries to pretending to be an astronaut, there's plenty of fun to be had by creative and curious kids. Try out some of our favorites. 

17. Please Touch Museum â€” Philadelphia

Why it's great: Kids from age 6 months to age 8 can play in the mini market, explore space, pretend to drive a truck, and more.

Tip: Pack snacks and water to avoid meltdowns and eat in the designated areas for outside food.
