Ages 4-8
Brookline Booksmith says: Just like the magpie, it's in our nature to want more and more and more stuff, right? Well...no, not really. With a little effort, and some good role models, even a magpie can change her ways. This is a gorgeously illustrated book about simplifying. Use it as a gentle way of telling your kids that you are going to donate two thirds of their toys to charity!

Things to do with kids: 2 Summer Day Camps and 1 Overnight Camp Just for Girls

Traditional day camps, overnight camps, sports camps, enrichment programs - there are so many opportunities for kids to grow and learn that it’s hard to know how to narrow down your selection. This post in our continuing series about summer camp options focuses on camps that are just for girls.

We asked the directors of these camps about the benefits of a “girl only” camp. The consensus? It can provide a welcoming, nurturing environment (no popularity contests!) that reinforces a girl’s sense of self-worth and offers a place where campers feel comfortable trying new things, and have a chance to relax, away from the pressures and competition of the busy school year. For more helpful advice, be sure to check out our 8 Tips for Choosing the Right Camp for Your Daughter, offered by Samantha Razook Murphy, founder of Curious Jane.

2 Day Camps for Girls

Curious Jane
Started in New York and now in Boston, Curious Jane is a summer camp where girls entering 3rd through 6th grades (Curious Jane) an girls entering 1st and 2nd grades (Curious Jane Jr) choose from a wide variety of class themes – all revolving around creative explorations in design, writing, science and engineering. Curious Jane is not your typical “take-em-to-the-park-and-run-em-ragged” summer camp - the focus is on making the girls feel special and leveling the field in a way through an all-girls environment.
